As of now, it doesn't appear that a Namor solo film is planned for the future. Namor was introduced in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and may be the first mutant in the main Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline. The plot of the film centers around the aftermath of King T'Challa's death, which left Queen Ramonda, Shuri, M'Baku, Okoye, and the Dora Milaje toil to protect their country from intervening world powers. The mutant submariner is introduced as the film's antagonist. Unfortunately, legal issues prevented Namor from making a solo film.
When you're the producer of a film as successful as Black Panther, it's understandable to be asked what's next. So when Nate Moore was recently asked about the possibility of a Namor solo movie as part of the MCU, he was open and honest about the legal issues currently standing in his way.
In an interview with TheWrap, Moore said, “Honestly, it affects us more, and not talking too much out of school, but in how we market the film than how we use it in the film. »
Moore added, "There wasn't really anything we couldn't do from a character perspective for him, which is good because we clearly drew from the source material, but we also brought in some big changes to really anchor it. in this world in a truth that the edit never really landed on, I would say, in a big way. »
Characters who share the fate of Namor
Marvel faced bankruptcy in the 1990s, so it adopted a policy of selling the rights to Marvel characters to other studios. That deal is still in effect, so Marvel can't make a Namor movie without Universal's blessing. This also explains why the MCU has no Hulk movies other than The Incredible Hulk. The best-known example is that Sony still owns the rights to Spider-Man and various Spider-Man-related characters, including Venom.
The bottom line is that the legal issues surrounding Namor are just too complex for Marvel Studios to navigate now. There are too many cooks in the kitchen, so to speak, and it would take a lot of work to get everyone on the same page. That said, it's not impossible to see a Namor solo movie down the line. If the legal issues can be ironed out, and if Marvel Studios feels like it's a story worth telling, then we might see Namor on the big screen at some point.
