Football fans use American flag to save falling cat

The biggest football game between the University of Miami and Appalachian State University on Saturday night took place in the stands, where spectators banded together to save a feline fan.

A video from Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens showed the cat hanging from an upper deck, where it was apparently clinging by its claws to some type of cloth on the railing. At least one person leaned over to help, but the cat fell onto the seats below.

Fortunately, the keeled kitten was caught by fans holding an American flag as a makeshift rescue tarp.

The flag belonged to season ticket holder Craig Cromer and his wife, Kimberly, NBC Miami reported. Cromer, a facilities manager at the University of Miami, told the station that he and his wife untied the flag from the railing when they saw the cat hanging above them.

“They were trying to grab it from above and they couldn't reach it, but they scared it from below,” Cromer said. “He just stood there for a little while with his two front paws, then one paw, and then I was like, 'Oh, my God, it's coming soon.' "

Several videos were shared online, showing a stadium filled with fans riveted by the event. Cheers erupted once the cat appeared to be safely rescued, and Miami won the game.
